The Lakes of Anderson Mesa, Arizona
Lake Mary, Mormon Lake, Marshall Lake, Al's Lake,
Mud Lake, Cow Lake, Kinnikinick Lake, Deep Lake,
Coconino Lake, Morton Lake, and Others
The region known as Anderson Mesa actually consists of five mesas southeast of Flagstaff.
The area contains, among other things, a complex of lakes and wetlands. The water level in
all the lakes varies dramatically.
In wetter years they're all true lakes but in drier years some
of them may become reduced to ponds or even grassy meadows. A number of them are popular
recreation areas including Lake Mary, Lower Lake Mary, Mormon Lake, Kinnikinick Lake, Ashurst
Lake and Marshall
Lake. However, there are also many lesser-visited "lakes" where you can hike
to your heart's content and encounter few, if any, other people. These quieter, more remote
places include Breezy Lake, Ducksnest Lake, Long Lake, Boot Lake, Indian Lake,
Coconino
Lake, Deep Lake, Potato Lake, Al’s Lake, Mud Lake, Cow Lake, Morton Lake and a number
of others. Additionally, many of these lakes/wetlands are within the Anderson Mesa
Conservation Opportunity Area, which was created to protect the region's diverse wildlife.
