Grand Falls on the Little
Colorado River, Arizona
Grand Falls (a.k.a. "Chocolate Falls") is on the Little Colorado River, which flows
through the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona. It's water comes and goes but
after heavy rains the muddy falls are quite spectacular. Actually, even during low
flow one can still get great photos by trekking to the bottom of the falls and moving in
close. Or at least that used to be the case. Unfortunately, non-tribal members have
not respected Grand Falls, leaving behind trash and scaring up the surrounding land
with their off-road vehicles. As a result, the Navajo Nation closed the area to
outsiders in March 2023. All these photos were taken prior to the closure.
