Ash Creek in the Galiuro
Mts., southeast Arizona

There are many Ash Creeks in Arizona. This one is in the Galiuro Mts.
in the southeast part of the state. The drainage was apparently named
after ash trees, but what steals the show are the maples, which turn red
and yellow in autumn. Also, many hikers are surprised to learn that the
often-overlooked Galiuros rise from the surrounding desert/grassland
to an elevation of 7,663 feet, making the range one of Arizona's sky
islands. You can even see aspen trees on the way to Bassett Peak.
